Marine battery systems
Saft batteries meet all these and more, making Saft the go-to marine battery supplier for the likes of Rolls-Royce and Benetti. Building on decades of proven expertise in the delivery of large industrial nickel and lithium-ion battery systems, Saft is your ideal partner today to help meet marine energy goals of tomorrow.
International environmental regulations on NOX, SOX and CO2 emissions demand new battery designs for clean marine transport – commercial, passenger and leisure – that are high-performance and economical. Saft’s high-tech marine batteries ensure the proper functioning of control boards and propulsion, including the full- or hybrid-electric architecture increasingly seen as a strong alternative to conventional propulsion.
A marine battery system can last for decades with careful specification and treatment. Selecting the right marine battery supplier will ensure a longer lifetime of reliable, autonomous service with high efficiency, fewer replacements and lower maintenance needs.
Saft is the supplier of choice for shipyards and OEMs worldwide for fully integrated, turnkey systems backed by full technical support for their emergency backup, lighting, engine starting and other auxiliary systems. Together, Saft and the marine industry are making marine battery technology clean, safe and reliable.
Propulsion batteries - powering all marine applications
Saft has a wide range of marine battery systems to meet the needs of many different players in the industry including tugboats, workboats, offshore support vessels, dredgers, ferries, offshore platforms, large ocean cruise-liners, private yachts, and cargo vessels.
Lithium-ion marine battery
A safe choice
Advanced lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery technology offers interesting new possibilities for the creation of highly efficient and cost-effective marine propulsion and auxiliary systems. Li-ion technology is of particular interest for fully electric and hybrid propulsion systems, where the batteries work in conjunction with diesel, or possibly gas turbine, generators and electric motors. Its specific advantages will vary according to the type of application. For workboats such as harbor tugs, which spend most of their time at sea moving into position and only operate at full power for very short periods, hybrid power will significantly improve fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions. Rather than sizing a diesel engine for peak power, it can be specified at a more economical size for average power, with the extra power drawn from the batteries when required.
Saft batteries for clean propulsion
The civil marine industry needs to adapt fast to meet ever tighter environmental regulations. Designers are playing a vital part in this evolution by integrating new concepts in ship architecture with cutting-edge battery technologies to reduce emissions and increase efficiency and profitability.
Saft is working proactively with navies, shipyards and OEMs in industrial programs worldwide to implement advanced technology for the design and manufacture of lightweight, lithium marine battery systems. By supplying fully integrated systems backed with extensive technical support to OEMs and end-users, Saft goes beyond the limits of conventional technologies to create powerful new possibilities. Saft is already working with key partners in this growing and demanding market to provide Li-ion battery solutions for a variety of clean transportation modes.
Saft has the know-how to support customers in the critical task of sizing their compact marine battery solutions to meet the need of each specific application. Utilizing its extensive experience and customized modeling enables Saft to deliver the optimum solution to ensure safety and a long service life.
Saft offers the following selection of lithium-ion marine propulsion batteries:
Nickel marine battery manufacturer
With a legacy of more than 100 years in nickel battery technology, Saft’s nickel marine battery systems are regularly installed on ships and boats for critical engine starting and backup power duty. They’re built to withstand the toughest industrial environments and therefore contribute to strategically important operations around the world. An example is the installation of our SPH and SBM nickel battery solutions on a fleet of eight Russian icebreakers in the Azov Sea. The original batteries, also supplied by Saft, delivered more than 30 years of service.
Nickel battery technology has significant advantages over lead-acid technology in terms of reliability, calendar life, Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and predictable performance with no risk of ‘sudden death’. Able to function in a wide range of temperatures, resist electrical abuse, shock, and vibrations, our nickel marine battery packs are also used to supply year-round power to offshore platforms, navigation buoys, and lighthouses.
